Pneumonia Vaccine Self-Scheduler

Basic Criteria 

Age: Are you 50 years of age or older? (Must be YES)

Availability: Would you be available for study visits over the next 7 months? (Must be YES)

Technology Access: Do you have access to a smartphone, tablet, or computer with internet for completing electronic questionnaires? (Must be YES)

 Answers Must be NO 

  • Have you ever had pneumonia? This is a serious infection caused by pneumococcal bacteria, such as pneumococcal meningitis or bloodstream infection.
    -Participants who have had pneumonia CAN participate but ONLY if they didn’t have pneumococcal meningitis or bloodstream infection.
    -If participants aren’t sure about what kind of pneumonia they had, they are okay to come in ONLY IF they were NOT hospitalized or intubated (tube placed in chest)
    -Participants who have had pneumonia but weren’t sure about the type AND were NOT hospitalized OR intubated CAN come in AS LONG as it’s been 30 days or longer since they were sick.
  • Have you ever received a pneumonia vaccine (pneumococcal vaccine)? This includes vaccines like Prevnar, Pneumovax, or any pneumonia shot at any age.
  • Have you received any vaccines in the past 2 weeks, or are you planning to get any vaccines in the next 2 weeks?
    • Exception: COVID-19 vaccines and flu shots are okay as long as they’re not within 7 days before or after the study vaccine
    • Live vaccines (like MMR, shingles vaccine Zostavax) must be at least 30 days before or after
  • 3. Have you ever had a severe allergic reaction to any vaccine? This includes reactions like:
    • Widespread hives all over your body
    • Swelling of face, lips, or throat
    • Difficulty breathing or anaphylaxis
    • Any reaction requiring emergency medical treatment
  • Are you currently taking any immunosuppressive medications? These include medications that weaken your immune system, such as:
    • High-dose steroids (prednisone more than 5 mg daily)
    • Chemotherapy drugs
    • Anti-rejection medications for organ transplants
    • Biologics for autoimmune conditions (like methotrexate, adalimumab/Humira)
  • Have you taken high-dose steroids (prednisone 10 mg or more daily) for 14 days or longer within the past 2 weeks? (Note: This doesn’t include nasal sprays, inhalers, or creams)
  • Are you currently participating in any other medical research study, or have you received any investigational medication or treatment within the past 30 days?
  • Do you have any condition that weakens your immune system? This includes:
    • Leukemia or lymphoma (blood cancers)HIV/AIDS
    • Chronic kidney failure requiring dialysis
    • Born with or acquired immune deficiency
  • Do you have a bleeding disorder diagnosed by a doctor? This includes conditions like hemophilia, blood clotting problems, or platelet disorders that cause problems with injections or blood draws.
  • Do you currently have HIV, Hepatitis B, or Hepatitis C? (Note: This refers to current/active infection)
  • Have you received blood, blood products, or immunoglobulin (antibody treatments) within the past 60 days?
  • Have you been diagnosed with cancer within the past 5 years? (Exception: Successfully treated skin cancer [basal cell or squamous cell] or cervical cancer in situ are usually okay)
  • Do you currently have a fever over 100.4°F (38°C) or any acute illness? (Note: You may be able to reschedule if this is temporary)
  • Do you have any other medical, psychiatric, surgical or social condition that may hinder you from study participation?
  • Are you currently an employee of Vaxcyte, the research site, or a first-degree relative (parent, child, sibling) of any study staff?

For Women Only – Answers Must be NO 

    • Are you currently pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant during the next 7 months?
    • If you could become pregnant: Are you unable or unwilling to use effective birth control from 7 days before vaccination through the end of the study (7 months)?
      • Acceptable methods of birth control include; condoms, male or female, with or without a spermicide;
        • diaphragm or cervical cap with spermicide
        • intrauterine device (IUD)
        • contraceptive pills or patch
        • injectable contraceptives
        • tubal ligation, hysterectomy or a vasectomized partner.
        • Abstinence from heterosexual intercourse

 Answers Must be YES 

  • Are you willing to have blood samples drawn and stored for research purposes?
  • Can you provide a photo ID to verify your identity at study visits?
  • Are you willing and able to complete an electronic diary on your phone/computer for 7 days after vaccination to track any side effects?

Compensation up to $1,170 may be available for time and travel
