Osteoarthristis of the Knee Self-Scheduler

BASIC CRITERIA:

  • Age between 18 and 75 years old 
  • BMI ≤ 35 kg/m2 
  • Have you been diagnosed with osteoarthritis in one of your knees? 
  • Have you tried and failed conservative treatments for your knee osteoarthritis for at least 3 months? (This includes things like weight management, physical therapy, or pain medications) 
  • Do you have both an X-ray and MRI of your problem knee that we could review? 

ANSWERS MUST BE NO 

  • Are you pregnant or nursing? 
  • Have you had substance or alcohol abuse issues in the past 3 years? 
  • Do you have any reason you cannot have an MRI? (Such as metal implants, pacemakers, or severe claustrophobia) 
  • Are you currently involved in or receiving workman’s compensation or disability claims? 
  • Have you received any of the following injections in your problem knee within the last 3 months? 
  • Hyaluronic acid (gel injections for cushioning), PRP (platelet-rich plasma) 
  • Bone marrow aspirate or concentrate, Steroid injections 
  • Any experimental/investigational drugs 
  • Have you had surgery or radiation therapy on your problem knee in the last 6 months? 
  • Have you ever had any of these cartilage repair procedures in your problem knee? 
    • MACI or ACI (cartilage cell implantation), OATS procedure (cartilage plugs) 
    • OCA (cartilage transplant from donor), Agili-C implant 
    • Partial knee replacement 
  • Have you had any of these newer treatments for your problem knee? 
    • Subchondroplasty 
    • Cryoneurolysis (freezing nerves) 
    • Genicular nerve ablation (nerve burning) 
    • Genicular artery embolization (blocking blood vessels) 
    • MISHA procedure or other knee implants 
  • Do you have rheumatoid arthritis or any form of inflammatory arthritis? 
  • Do you have gout or pseudogout? 
  • Do you currently have any untreated Meniscal root tears and/or severe meniscal extrusion? 
  • Have you been diagnosed with any of these autoimmune conditions? (exception: celiac disease is not exclusionary) 
    • Addison’s Disease, Dermatomyositis, 
    • Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Crohn’s or ulcerative colitis) 
    • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Multiple sclerosis, Myasthenia gravis 
    • Pernicious anemia, Sjogren’s Syndrome, Lupus 
  • Have you been diagnosed with any of these bone or joint problems in your problem knee? 
    • Avascular necrosis (AVN) or osteonecrosis (bone death) 
    • Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD), Bone tumors, Paget’s disease 
    • Bone infection or osteomyelitis 
  • Do you have any of these rare conditions? 
    • Ochronosis (dark pigment disease), Acromegaly (growth hormone disorder) 
    • Hemochromatosis (iron overload), Wilson’s disease (copper disorder) 
    • Genetic collagen disorders 
    • Hyperkinesia or other genetic movement disorders 
  • Do you have a current diagnosis with any of these diseases? Note: allowed to participate if cured 
    • HIV, Hepatitis, HTLV, Syphilis, Blood clotting disorders 
  • Do you currently have an infection requiring IV antibiotics? 
  • Do you have uncontrolled diabetes with an HbA1c level above 8%? 
  • Do you have uncontrolled high blood pressure (Stage 3 hypertension, >180/120)? Note: allowed to participate if they are willing to comply with medications to control BP at surgery 
  • Have you ever been diagnosed with any psychotic diseases or epilepsy? 
  • Have you received chemotherapy in the past 12 months? 
  • Have you ever received stem cell therapy from a donor? 
  • Have you taken any immunosuppressant medications in the past 6 weeks? (Such as Cyclosporin A or azathioprine) 
  • Do you have a known allergy to hyaluronic acid (HA) or hyaluronan products? 

ANSWERS MUST BE YES 

  • Are you able to do some daily activities on your own, but do have some limitations due to your knee? 
  • Would you be willing to stop taking pain medications other than Tylenol (acetaminophen) for up to 2 years if you qualify for future treatment studies? 
  • Would you be willing and able to sign consent, and follow a conservative rehabilitation program for 6-9 months if you qualify for future treatment studies?
