Basic Criteria
- Must be 50 to 64 years old (not yet turned 65)
- Have a BMI of ≤30
- Must NOT have any serious health conditions that make COVID-19 more dangerous (we’ll review this in detail below)
- Must be in generally stable health (no recent hospitalizations or major health changes)
- Any previous COVID-19 vaccinations must have been at least 3 months ago
- Must be able to use a smartphone or tablet for daily symptom tracking
Answers Must Be NO
- Have you had COVID-19 infection in the past 3 months?
- Have you received any COVID-19 vaccine in the past 3 months?
- Are you currently participating in any other COVID-19 research study?
- Do you have any of these health conditions: asthma that requires daily medication, type 1 or type 2 diabetes (history of gestational diabetes okay, prediabetes not on meds okay), severe obesity (weight that significantly affects daily activities), memory problems or Parkinson’s disease, liver disease, tuberculosis (TB), or previous stroke?
- Do you have moderate or severe depression? (History of mood disorder that is not active, has been resolved with no symptoms, and has been stable off meds for more than one year is okay. Anxiety being treated with a VERY occasional PRN medication is okay.)
- Do you have history of ADD, ADHD, or schizophrenia?
- Are you a current or former smoker (including marijuana)? (“Former smoker” is anyone who smoked for more than 1 year in the past. Occasional use of marijuana gummies and edibles is okay as long as does not affect study participation.)
- Do you have any of these serious health conditions: kidney dialysis, active cancer receiving treatment (especially leukemia, lymphoma, or other blood cancers), organ transplant, HIV with very low immune cell counts, cystic fibrosis, severe breathing problems (such as needing oxygen, severe COPD, or scarring of the lungs), heart failure or serious heart problems, severe kidney disease, or Down syndrome?
- Are you currently pregnant, trying to get pregnant, planning to become pregnant in the next 3 months, or currently breastfeeding?
- Have you ever had a life-threatening allergic reaction to any vaccine (such as difficulty breathing, swelling, severe rash that required emergency treatment)?
- Have you ever been told you have inflammation of the heart or heart lining (myocarditis or pericarditis)?
- Are you currently taking medications that weaken your immune system, such as: daily steroid pills (prednisone or similar) for more than 2 weeks, chemotherapy, or anti-rejection medications for organ transplant?
- Have you received antibody treatments or blood transfusions in the past 3 months? (Blood donations are okay.)
- Are you allergic to any ingredients in COVID-19 vaccines?
- Are you currently sick with an active infection, uncontrolled symptoms, or were you recently hospitalized?
Answers Must Be YES
- If you are a woman who could become pregnant, have you been using a reliable birth control (condoms/diaphragms/cervical caps with spermicide, birth control pills, IUD, implant, patch, shot, Abstinence or other effective method) for at least 28days and willing to continue for 3 months after the study vaccination?
- For women of non-childbearing potential are you either:
- Surgically sterilized via hysterectomy, bilateral salpingectomy, bilateral tubal ligation, or bilateral oophorectomy OR
- Postmenopausal with no menses for ≥12 months without an alternative medical cause
- Are you willing to track your health daily on a smartphone or tablet and report any COVID-19 symptoms immediately if they occur?
- Are you willing to track your health daily on a smartphone or tablet and report any COVID-19 symptoms immediately if they occur?
- Are you willing to swab your own nose at home if you develop COVID-19 symptoms and mail the swabs to the lab?
- Do you agree not to participate in any research involving receipt of investigational products (drug/biologic/device), including other SARS-CoV-2 prevention or treatment trials, for the duration of the study?
